I can't open up a file, its says I'm missing xlr.. what is that

I'm trying to open a spreadsheet from my sister,and when I do it says, try a
program that will open it..

I think you'll find that xlr is a Microsoft Works format, not Excel. Get
your sister to do a "Save As" into Excel format.
