I can't play most avi files in powerpoint

When embedding most avi files, I cannot play them (screen goes black but can
hear sound) - links are good.
I can play the files in windows media player without any problems.
I can also play these avi files if I insert them as media player objects,
problem is that I've been given a large presentation that already has them
embedded as movies.

Any suggestions?
