Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) Processor: Intel I wanted to type the letter e with a symbol indicating the long vowel sound. In the Symbols menu I find some vowels with symbols over them (but not the one I want), and other pronunciation symbols with no letter under them. One of them seems to be the long-vowel symbol. How can I type the symbol so that it appears over the letter?

Andrea, after you insert the long-vowel symbol and close the Symbol
window, what happens if you type an "e"? When I try it in Word 2004,
the "e" appears under the long-vowel symbol.

No luck. I got the e after the symbol rather than under it. I tried it with a different symbol and got the same result. I wonder if the problem is that apparently when I'm in "symbol" I'm not in Word, so I have to leave "symbol" - either close out of it or just click on the Word document which grays out "symbol" - before I can type the e.

Use the OS X Character Viewer -- you'll find more options than you'll know
what to do with :) It's far more robust than the Insert> Symbol feature in
Word. See Mac Help for information on it.

If you prefer to use Word's feature open the font list & select (normal
text) rather than trying to use the limited & archaic Symbol font. Lower
case e with macron ( ? ) should be in the 5th row depending on what your
default font is.
