I deleted the homepage

In Navigation View, I deleted the homepage thinking that another page would
default to become the new homepage.

No such luck. How do I assign a page to be the homepage?
Can I create a new page and make it the homepage?

By the way, just what, exactly, makes a homepage different from any other
page?

A "home page" is a file which resides directly under the root of a site, and
which is named (usually) index.htm, index.html, or one of a few other
possibilities.

If the new page is directly under the site root - not within any
subdirectories - you should be able to just re-name it to "index.htm", and
it will become the home page.
