I enter "54" and Excel interprets it as ".54"

I don't know what happened, but if I type "54" in a cell, Excel thinks I mean ".54." This is driving me nuts, how do I fix this? I want to type in "54" and it be "$54.00," not "$.54."

In the "edit" preference see if "fixed decimal" option is checked.

I snooped around and that's what I found would do what you describe.
Uncheck it.
