I get "Microsoft Office Word has stopped working" on exit

P

PapaV

When I close down Word 2007, the message, "Microsoft Office Word has stopped
working" and then the message, "Microsoft Office Word trying to recover your
information" then "Microsoft Office Word restarting". I have to close the
program a 2nd time & get the same messages before the program shuts down.
What do I need to do to correct this issue?

I'm having the exact same problem. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Word, and then uninstalling and reinstalling Office. It didn't help. I still get this error every time I try to exit Word 2007. Anybody know how to fix?

The thing is... we don't know what "the exact same problem" is since this is
an original message thread not associated with any other. I see dozens and
dozens of messages, and I'd be hard-pressed to know which one you're
associating your problem with.

That said... exactly what error message are you getting when you close Word
2007?

Such problems usually have one of several causes:

1. Corrupted normal.dotm file.

2. Corrupted Data key in the registry.

3. An interfering add-in.

4. Corrupted Windows User profile.

5. A damaged installation.

Once we know what error you're seeing, we'll have a better idea of how to go
about solving the problem.

As an opening diagnostic... try opening Word in Safe Mode (press Ctrl when
launching Word, and click Yes to starting in Safe Mode). When you close Word
after starting in Safe Mode, does it close OK, or is there still the error?

I had this problem and found this fix on Microsoft's website.

1. Open up Regedit. (Go to Start and type "regedit" in the search field and press enter.)

2. In Regedit navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\12.0\Word\Data

3. Right mouse click on the "Data" folder and delete it.

4. Open up Word, close it, and voila, problem solved.

Thanks! This just started happening to me after an auto-update last night
11/12/2008 and this fixed it!. You would hope that with your post over a year
ago this would be repaired.

I have MS office professional 2007. Everything is updated. I'm running on
Windows Vista Ultimate. It is also up to date. Yesterday word worked fine.
I tried an ad-in where I could publish to a web page last night. It said
something like "no web page is associated with this add-in" or something like
that. I had the choice to set one up, or do it later. I chose do it later or
skip or similar choice. Then I think my computer updated during the night.
I think trying to use the add-in to publish to webpage didn't have anything
to do with my current problem, but I don't know.

Today I can't move the cursor around in the document field when using the
mouse. I can move the curor using the up/down/left/right arrows. The mouse
does allow me to move between pull-down menus at the top, but it won't let me
scroll down on the scroll bar on the side of the page. WHEN I GO TO CLOSE
THE PROGRAM, I GET A MESSAGE saying MICROSOFT OFFICE HAS STOPPED WORKING. I
choose to search for a solution to the problem on line, but it doesn't work
or find a fix. HOW CAN I RESOLVE THIS PROBLEM? PLEASE AND THANKS.

I have ran the office diagnostics program and it didn't find anything
wrong. When I close the program I I have a little pull down menu to show
details with the "Microsoft Office has stopped working" splash screen, where
I get the following message:

When I click on the HKey...it will not let me delete and I do not see the
data folder. Please advise further. Thanks!

Whatever you do, don't try to delete the entire hive (HKEY_CURRENT_USER).
Only delete the specific key mentioned in this algorithm! Editing the
registry without knowing what you are doing can break your entire operating
system!

Anyway, I guess the advise was extracted from
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/921541

If you are not familiar with the registry, which I assume you aren't if you
tried to delete that entire key, try the guided help mentioned on the above
page.
