I get nonsensical characters while typing and have to restart?

When typing in Word, it starts putting nonsensical characters instead of what
I am typing, in capitals when the caps lock is off, the degree sign, and I
lose functions of file, edit, etc. This has happened on two different
computers while using Word 2000.
