I have lost all audio facility- how do I restore it?

I have checked all connections - microphone etc - and they seem fine but I
have lost all audio facility on my computer. Annoyingly I no longer hear the
ring tone when one of my Skype contacts calls! Someone out there should be
able to advise this non expert computer user how to restore sound to the
system Windows XP. Thanks in advance.
