I have messages in my inbox which I can neither delete or open

I have messages, several from the same person in my inbox and the reading
plane is grey and it states: 'The item cannot be displayed in the Reading
Plane. The item has not been retrieved from the server'. If you double click
a box comes up headed REMOTE ITEM HEADER with 4 options, none of which work.
1. Unmark this header item
2. Mark to download this message.
3. Mark to download this message and leave a copy on the server.
4. Mark to delete this message
I currently have over 100 such emails sitting in my inbox.
I am using microsoft outlook.
I hope someone can help with this problem.
