I have recently bought a new PC and it already had installed on it Microsoft
Works, There is nothing wrong with it except no one i know uses it so
therefore they cannot open documents i send. Is there anyway i can download
the Office version and is it expensive.

You cannot download Office. However, Microsoft Works, including
pre-installed OEM, is a qualifying product for Office 2003 upgrade version
of the edition of your choice.

See:

http://www.microsoft.com/office/editions/howtobuy/professional.mspx
{product upgrade is the same for all upgrade editions}

If the works was installed when I purchased the PC and I bought Office 2007 and installed is the a "universal" command to have all documents open up in Office.
