I lost my "Normal.dot"

I have lost my normal.dot and now all of my customized
toolbars, macros etc. are gone. I have recovered it from
our backup tape but I am not sure how to go about
reinstalling it. Also, how do you access the
normal.dot? In other words, how does Word know where to
go and find it?

Normal.dot is kept in whatever folder is set as your user templates folder
under Tools => Options => File Locations. Even the default for this varies
from version to version of both Word and your Operating System.

To replace it, you'll need to have Word closed. It is good that you had a
backup. For more about the templates folders and normal.dot, take a look at

In Word, choose Tools - Options - File Locations, and note the location of
User Templates. That's where Normal.dot is kept. So, close Word, rename the
copy of Normal.dot that's in the User Templates location, copy your backup
version into that location, and re-start Word. Once you're satisfied that
you don't need the renamed copy of Normal.dot, you can delete it.
