I, too, am without the original discs; Office 2002 for my desktop and Office
2003 for my laptop (all of my software discs were stolen).

Currently, both programs are running; I'm just looking in advance to prevent
problems in case of a hard drive failure, etc.

I've got Dell installed software, so, according to the website, since its
OEM, I have to go through Dell.

But Dell says the software is no longer available to be replaced, and that I
have to buy the software at retail.

Is this correct?

I did find a Microsoft site that said if my OEM had gone out of business,
Microsoft would supply a replacement disc. Double standard.

Which begs the question: I've got fully functioning legitimate software,
but am unable to proactively do anything to protect myself. I with all of
this online verification process that if it takes a new disc and key that MS
could just de-authorize the old one.

Yes and you won't get 2002 at any retailer either. Your best bet is EBay.
(Don't worry if it's pirated - your Product Key is what matters, not the
medium the software comes on...)
