If you had AutoRecover enabled and had been working longer than the set
interval, you should be presented with an AutoRecovery backup when you next
start Word.

Hello John,

You should look for a temp file in the folder that the document was saved
in. It should start with a "~$" and end in .tmp. You can chance the .tmp to
doc and delete the ~$ and it should open in Word. You can also search the
system for ~*.tmp. The original error could have happened for multiple
reasons. One of which involves updating your video driver. Corruption in
the Normal.dot file can also cause the issue. Does this happen often? Had
the computer been running for an extended amount of time. If you give me
more information on the Error I can help resolve the issue. I need the
exact Error Message? How often it happens? Did you have other programs
running when this happens?

It's never happened before and the only other program I
had running was aim. Their was a specific code on the
error either it was just one of those message that you
get with XP, "their was an error windows needs to close
the program to send the error report....etc" Thanks for
the help though I retyped the paper before i saw these
replies but I am interested in stopping this for the
future. I noticed though that I can't find a auto save
feature, i'm working with microsoft works that was loaded
onto my computer when I bought it I have a compaq
presario thanks for the help thus far anymore is
appreciated.

Hello John,

Word 2003, 2002 (XP), 2000 and 97 all have the AutoRecovery option in the
same location. This will save an AutoRecovery file at certain intervals.
The option is located at: Tools, Options Save in the Word application.
Make sure there is a check placed in the "Save AutoRecovery Info every:"
and set the time to at least every 10 minutes

Hope this helps.
