I need help with my default column settings!

Every time I open up word, it automatically uses two columns on the pag
when I only want one! Does anyone have an idea of how to solve this?
It's easy to go up and fix the column setting every time but kind of
hassle.

This is a version of the problem explained here:

You should be able to fix it either by changing the settings in your
Normal.dot or by renaming Normal.dot and allowing Word to create a new one -
read the FAQ to get more details.
