I need to change the labels on the x-axisfrom 1,2,3 etc to the category.

Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

I am trying to make an x-y scatter plot and i want to use category axis labels instead of the default numbers. I have done this before by using the "category (X)axis labels" box by selecting data source, however this time, that box is lightened (so i can't type/select anything) why why why? ive been trying to get this to work all day. this is SO frustrating.
