i need to insert a color in the header and footer.

i am able to do it but the width is preety thin.
i want to increase its width.

Are you trying for a colored line (border) or a colored background
(shading)? You can do either, using Borders and Shading or using drawing
objects, but be aware that if you are hoping to print to the edge (full
bleed), you probably won't be able to, as most printers require an
irreducible minimum unprintable area for paper handling.
