I/O error 6

PowerPoint 2000

Each time I attempt to open a file, the File Open dialog
box opens for a fraction of a second and then is replaced
by an error message "An unexpected error occurred: I/O
error 6". When I click on the OK button on this dialog box
the first time, nothing happens. When I click on it a
second time, another dialog box comes up "A error occurred
while creating a file dialog. Please save presentations,
exit, and then restart PowerPoint." Of course, this makes
the program unusable!

I have uninstalled and reinstalled twice; no cure. Any
ideas?
