I receive emails at a horribly slow rate. How do I correct this?

I use Outlook 2003. Everything was fine until a couple weeks ago when I
started receiving messages at such a slow rate that the send/receive function
timed out before I could receive even one message. The messages are not very
large, about 72 KB. Can anyone help?
