I see only A small red "x" in the center of picture manager?

When I go to look ay my pictures, a lot of them I only see a "red x" in the
center of the Picture manager, could you please tell me why?

I wopuld greatly appreciate it if someone would be able to answer this for
me and then tell me how do I actually see the pictures!

It means the picture file is not in a recognised format and can't be
displayed.
