I want to try office 2007 but when i go to down load it they say that i will
lose my outlook 2003. I realy am concerned with outlook and publisher. but i
got the computer from private seller and do not have any of the cd. I would
like the pay the minum coast to be able to try 2007 and be able to get back
to 2003 if i don't like it. one other thing would i have to help other
upgrade to see my emails.

If you don't have any of the old CDs, you are risking losing something. In a
perfect world you'd be fine but this isn't a perfect world. If you buy the
upgrade for Office and need to install it on a new computer, you'd need the
qualifying product. Personally, I wouldn't do anything to screw up what I
know works.

BTW - the old owner should have either deleted Office off of that computer
or given you the CDs.

OK, since you asked...... Spend $50 here:

http://www.acronis.com/homecomputing/products/trueimage/

Create an image of your harddrive and put it on DVD(s). Now you can
delete your old version of Office, try 2007 and restore the image if
you don't like 2007.

BTW, I installed Office 2007 as an upgrade to Office 2003 and it did
save all my Outlook settings but I can't guarantee the same will work
for you....

I don't know if that will help her repair Office should something screw
things up.

Princess - do yourself a favor: DON'T DOWNLOAD THE TRIAL. I'm telling you
the same thing I would tell my best friend. Murphy's Law will kick in and
you'll be so screwed it won't be funny. Plus you won't have to spend any
money. I'm curious, why do you want to try Office 2007? What can't you do
now that you think that Office 2007 will allow you to do? And are you sure
that your secondhand computer will run it?

Correct, all it will do is allow her to put her computer back exactly
as it was before she installed the trial and I think that will be
sufficient for her purposes.

I agree with all you say but if she still wants to give it a try,
creating an image BEFORE downloading the trial is the best way to so so
safely.

BTW, I'd recommend Acronis or other imaging software to anyone with a
computer, to me it's as essential as a keyboard or monitor.

When you install the Office 2007 trial you can opt to keep your previous
versions. That way if you do elect to uninstall Office 2007 you'll still
have the old versions. You may need to use the "Custom Installation" option
in order to do this. BUT you can only have one version of Outlook installed
so you would want to keep Outlook 2003 and not install Outlook 2007 since
you'll be unable to reinstall it.

Do note that if you do have any major concerns then you should follow the
advice others have posted. :)

Another item to note, if you are looking for the cheapest route to take, if
you are a student then you might qualify for the Ultimate Steal: Office
Ultimate 2007 for around $60 USD:
http://www.theultimatesteal.com/home.asp

I'm not sure how this works when it comes to your installation CDs but if
you elect to go the Ultimate Steal route then make sure you get a copy of
your installation CDs - there may be an extra fee for this. If not then
you'll be in the same situation as you are now.

My advice is to avoid Office 2007 (and Vista) like the plague. They are
slower and less featured that previous versions and the ribbon make no sense
at all - so stay where you are.

I don't think anyone mentioned this but you can test drive office 2007
"live" here http://www.runaware.com/launch?c_app_id=7843&refname=citrix

It works through your web browser. it never installs on the PC and
wont mess with your 2003 stuff.

Office 2007 isn't slow, well...unless you are trying to use it on an old
computer, like older than 5 years or so.

Regarding the features, there are a LOT of new features in Office 2007. I'm
guessing you haven't spent a lot of time with it? There's far more to Office
2007 than just a new look. :)
