We do posters through powerpoint all the time. We print it to an internal
networked Plotter printer that has rolled paper.
Goto File, Page Set-up
Select CUSTOM for slide size and enter the exact width/height of the
finished poster
Based on your size, you need to then pick LANDSCAPE OR PORTRAIT.
Select OK
Powerpoint will set up a VERY LARGE slide for you. It will be odd working
on such as large area-- you need to be careful about your FONTs-- you may be
working with Font Size of 178 and clip art images of 6"x8" or even 12"x18".
You will need to ZOOM in to 400% just to see your work too...

Tips:
1) Set up your page size BEFORE designing the poster.
2) If you are using ROLL paper, know the size of the roll of paper as that
will limit one side of your poster. Roll paper is usually in 24" or 36"
paper. We have 36" paper and I design for a 34" poster at maxium along one
side. I always seem to have problems when I tried to go to the edge of the
paper.
3) Print DIRECT 1:1 ratio. If you are comfortable with ratios: you can
design at a 30%, 40% or 50% image and then enlarge to your final size through
the printer but you have to DESIGN the poster at a reduced ratio of the final
size.
4) If you are sending your file out to be printed at a shop or at Kinko's,
talk to them first-- a few minutes with them will save lots of time later...
