IBM, Microsoft, and me

Have an XP IBM which has never worked right. One of the
things it has is a phantom "Programs" folder,
containing "ver3" containing "bin". The "bin" file doesn't
seem to be accessible to the Administrator of my computer.
This folder has regenerated itself in spite of a reinstall
of IBM system, and cannot be removed. So far.

IBM is pretending it's not happening. This is the same
sort of computer system (not to MENTION the security chip)
the govt and corporations use, one is told . . .

ANY advice or corporate prodding welcome. A Microsoft man
in Nova Scotia helped reset the XP last night, and might
be interested to know that it didn't "take", if anyone
knows how to forward this.

Have an XP IBM which has never worked right. [It is
a "new" computer, gotten last Feb., before SP2. It has
been back to the factory THREE times. Something reinstalls
itself, perhaps into the subsystem. I THINK. OR they don't
do ANYthing at the factory? In any case, it doesn't work
after fixes, they won't take it back, and they apparently
can't fix it. I bought Office 2003 from IBM. It didn't
HAVE FrontPage, it turned out. So installed FrontPage 2003
from Staples.] One of the
things it has is a phantom "Programs" folder, ["microsoft
frontpage" (like that, with no capitals; I believe it's a
folder created by me, but long ago. It shows 0 files, etc.
but McAfee Virus Scan shows 47 files)],
containing "ver3" containing "bin". The "bin" file doesn't
seem to be accessible to the Administrator of my
computer. [I even ventured into the XP Permissions,
something I'd promised myself AND the Microsoft man I'd
never do again ... ]
This folder has regenerated itself [so did one
called "netmeeting" no caps, which behaves similarly] in
spite of a reinstall
of IBM system, and cannot be removed. So far. Where do they come FROM??!!

IBM is pretending it's not happening. N.B.: This is the same
sort of computer system [not to MENTION the security
chip, which was hacked away in two days after it was
installed -- IBM, which of course had pushed the chip in
sales, later discouraged me from installing it; I
eventually did, but maybe not soon enough) the govt and
corporations use, one is told . . . this might be where
the "bad intelligence" comes from. AND IBM won't exchange
the machine for a non-lemon. AND they won't fix it. AND
Microsoft sends me to IBM, because it's OEM support. Catch-
22 squared. Help. Please.]

This FP folder is installed by the Windows and some Office Installations. It is use to manage the
Web Folder function. You can not delete this folder, and you do not have FrontPage. So just ignore
it.

Really? What IS the Web Folder function, anyway? It
doesn't say it's part of the system. And I don't remember
it from the original configuration. Nor "netmeeting".

I DO have FrontPage 2003 -- that's the whole POINT;
there's also a website wanting work. I hate to try to
reinstall the program while the machine is ... unstable,
with folders and things coming and going.

In that it seems to be part of what keeps the computer
from working, ignoring it isn't in the cards. Maybe I'll
go ahead and try to install it, even if whatever's wrong
is wrong.

Do you have a full version of FP to install?

You can install FP 2003 fine, it won't interfere with this. You have seen
the folder in question, it's actually responsible for the web folders that
may show up under your network places. It provides some basic functionality
used by other Office programs for connecting to network locations as well as
Windos XP. There should be a few things in the bin folder. Netmeeting may
also be part of the OS, though in an original install of the machine the OEM
may have hidden it, or removed it as an installed component. It's an older
item, but even on my clean installs it's there by default. Basically, these
items are in use and should not be responsible for any wonky behavior of the
system and are very normal parts of the OS.

Hope this helps,

I believe you mean a phantom Microsoft FrontPage folder. It's installed
by the Operating System. It cannot be removed. Such is life.
