Icon in System Tray

Whenever I open Outlook 2003, an icon is placed in the system tray which then
remains there for the remainder of my Windows session. How do I prevent that?

Close Outlook and the icon will be gone.

Unfortunately that doesn't work. As I write, Outlook is closed, but icon is
still in system tray.
