icons for .doc .xls .ppt .pdf are gone in my documents

running vista ultimate and now these icons have disappeared. the link still
works but the icon is not there. any ideas?

Do you have the office installed. Seems like the office is not registered
properly.
Try a detect and repair from the add/remove programs if you have office
installed.
Otherwise reinstall the entire office package.

yes office is installed, i can open doc, xls, ppt, ect... little icon is
missing that's all. someone said the shell32.dll could be corrupt, is this
possible? and if so how can i repair it? i tried a repair and it says "this
update package could not be opened. verify that the update package exists and
that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that
this is a valid windows installer update package". what in the world does
this mean?
