I'd like to link the name in the footer to the file name - doable?

If the user makes a Save as, to "version 2" eg, it's crucial that the
(identical) footer changes as well, and no doubt, people will forget that if
it has to be done manually. Can it be automated, or linked?

You have to use code to do this.

Add the current path and file to every slide should get you started. Not
sure how you'd make it happen automatically, though.
