Identifying documents I've inserted into a Word 2007 document

L

Lew Yedwab

I'm composing a manual that will run to something near 100 pages.

I've been inserting images in what I think is a very organized, respectable
fashion. I don't just paste in screen grabs. I insert images that have
properly saved and named and stored elsewhere.

The images I use are embedded, not linked. IOW, they do not disappear if the
original file is moved.

However, for the life of me, I cannot right-click, petititon the Lord with
prayer or even do a rain dance, to find the file name of an image while I'm
working in the Word document.

No offense to any Microsoft functionaries who may be monitoring (or
editing!) these fora, but this exact capability is a snap in my two other
composition tools, Framemaker and RoboHelp.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Hi Lew,

If you save the file as rtf and open it with a text editor, searching for .jpg} will locate any embedded jpg-format files. Change
the 'jpg' to whatever file format you're after. Note that this still won't return the original file's path and that there may be
some extraneous characters appended to the start of the filename.

I note your comment about linking. To see how you can use relative paths for linked images in Word, check out the solution I've
posted at:

retrieving the filenames (and paths) this way is much simpler.

Wow! Thanks. It's tremendous to have you bunch of experts scattered Out There
and generous enough to help out a stranger!

Also, thanks for not getting thrown by me using the word "documents" in the
subject line intead of "images".

Macropod, are you sure? I cannot get this to work when saving as RTF from
Word 2000 or Word 2003 and then opening using Notepad. Am I doing something
wrong?

Doug Robbins - Word MVP

Something that I just noticed may help you. I created a document in which I
inserted some pictures and then I used Word 2007's save as PDF facility.
When I then look at the PDF File in Adobe Reader and place the mouse cusor
in a picture, the filename of the picture appears in a small box just below
the mouse cursor.
