IE7 Breaks My Front Page Preview

D

David Murray

I'm so dissappointed, i was looking forward to using IE7 but it still
breaks my Front Page 2003 preview. (Bottom Left Tab)

When i click on the preview tab bottom left i get an "Error on line 2"
which breaks my javascript menus and they don't show. (Xara Webstyle)

I think it may be a visual basic error but i'm not sure.

It did this with the Beta which i thought fair enough, but it's still there
on the
final IE7. (Now out on yahoo)

On uninstalling IE7 and going back to IE6 all works perfectly.

It took me long enought to find out what was causing the problem
then i thought it might be IE7, i was right.

Can someone else who's using IE 7 confirm that their Front Page
preview tab works as expected ?

Thanks, David.

My mistake - it appears that both Yahoo and MSN released the (new) final
version just a few hours ago. The original Yahoo version was RC2, but it
looks like it is now the final version.

Yes it's most annoying not being able to use my Front page properly with IE
7 installed.
Looks like IE 6 is here to stay a while for me at least anyway, unless i can
work out
how to stop it breaking my previews and javascript in FrontPage.(

Using final version of IE7, (and the preceding RC1 and Betas) I have no
problems with JavaScript in Preview mode in FP2003. However, I use
server based webs.
In a disc based web I have the same problems as the fully updated IE6 -
JavaScript will not run from a disc based web unless security measures
are over-written.
Tools->Internet Options - Advanced Tag, but the block is there for your
own safety.

I dl'd IE7 final last night.

I can open disc-based webs in FP without a problem, but when I try to open
local host it's prompting for un/pw (to open xxxxx - my machine's name).

What are you supposed to put there? windows login & pw?

welp, my Preview is not broken with IE7 but;

if I enter my windows login name it will display in the login window as;
machine name\rob but wont accept my admin pw.

I went to IIS admin to Web, and it's set for "anon access" and "Allow IIS to
control password" and at the bottom; Intergrated Windows authentication.
None of which I'm am sure I understand fully, so I didn't mess with the
settings that were there.

I remember seeing solutions for this over the past few months but didn't pay
too much attention to the solutions (which I can't seem to find now)...

any ideas?

tnx

rob

Hi Guys, Thanks for your interest.
My website is based upon a template I purchased from luckymarble.com
The URL is www.esotericscience.org/faqs.htm
(although I get the same sort of error on every page)

I get three errors each time I preview the page in FP:

Line 2, Char 1, Invalid Character, Code 0, URL
file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Lee/Local%20Settings/Temporary%20Internet%20Files/FrontPageTempDir/pvw1.htm
Here is line 2 : <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">

Line 57, Char 1, SWF Object Undefined, Code 0, URL same as previous
Here is line 57: <script type="text/javascript">

Line 67, Char 1, SWF Object Undefined, Code 0, URL same as previous
Here is Line 67: <script type="text/javascript">

It makes no difference whether I click YES or NO to continue running scripts
on the page.
Each time I preview the page the number after pvw changes.
I am no expert, but there don’t appear to be any errors in the script on
those lines.

I don't get any script errors at www.esotericscience.org/faqs.htm (or any of your online pages)
Are you testing by saving the page in your FP web and using File Preview in Browser

Then use File Menu | Preview in Browser, not the Preview tab. IE7 changes how Windows works!

Thanks for the tip!
But in releasing IE7 it seems that microsoft have inadvertantly broken
Frontpage - are they going to fix it?

Most likely not, as it also effects Windows functions when working with applications launched from

I'm not sure if I have simulated your situation exactly like you are doing
but I did not get any script errors when viewing
http://www.esotericscience.org/faqs.htm in preview mode with FrontPage. Here
is what I did.
1. Opened http://www.esotericscience.org/faqs.htm in IE7
2. Clicked on the Edit icon in IE7 and selected "Edit With FrontPage"
3. When the page opened in FrontPage I clicked on the Preview Tab.
No errors were reported. One thing that didn't show was your Menu (Site
Navigation Bar) along the top left.

What your are describing does sound like what I have experienced in the past
when using the FrontPage preview tab on some of my work when I have had
scripts inserted into the code. But that was also before IE7 so I'm not
sure I would blame it totally on the new browser.

When the pages display correctly in what ever browser I preview them in
(which is usually IE, Netscape and Firefox to be sure they look as expected)
I am satisfied!

Thanks
Jeff

Try loading the page from a disk-based web on your local machine in FP's Preview tab.

No errors were reported. One thing that didn't show was your Menu (Site Navigation Bar) along the
top left.

What your are describing does sound like what I have experienced in the past when using the
FrontPage preview tab on some of my work when I have had scripts inserted into the code. But that
was also before IE7 so I'm not sure I would blame it totally on the new browser.

When the pages display correctly in what ever browser I preview them in (which is usually IE,
Netscape and Firefox to be sure they look as expected) I am satisfied!

Thanks
Jeff

Most likely not, as it also effects Windows functions when working with applications launched
from file/application servers, which they do not seem to be planning to fix.

Thanks for the tip!
But in releasing IE7 it seems that microsoft have inadvertantly broken
Frontpage - are they going to fix it?

:

Then use File Menu | Preview in Browser, not the Preview tab. IE7 changes how Windows works!

I didn't say that I got errors on my website. The errors only occur when
using the preview view in FrontPage.
I don't think there are any errors with the code on my site - the error is
related to frontpage and ie7.

:

I don't get any script errors at www.esotericscience.org/faqs.htm (or any of your online
pages)
Are you testing by saving the page in your FP web and using File Preview in Browser

| Hi Guys, Thanks for your interest.
| My website is based upon a template I purchased from luckymarble.com
| The URL is www.esotericscience.org/faqs.htm
| (although I get the same sort of error on every page)
|
| I get three errors each time I preview the page in FP:
|
| Line 2, Char 1, Invalid Character, Code 0, URL
|
file:///C:/Documents%20and%20Settings/Lee/Local%20Settings/Temporary%20Internet%20Files/FrontPageTempDir/pvw1.htm
| Here is line 2 : <html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml">
|
| Line 57, Char 1, SWF Object Undefined, Code 0, URL same as previous
| Here is line 57: <script type="text/javascript">
|
| Line 67, Char 1, SWF Object Undefined, Code 0, URL same as previous
| Here is Line 67: <script type="text/javascript">
|
| It makes no difference whether I click YES or NO to continue running scripts
| on the page.
| Each time I preview the page the number after pvw changes.
| I am no expert, but there donâ?Tt appear to be any errors in the script on
| those lines.
