If I PDF a photo/graphic, will speed download time?

I have many photos and cad drawings on my site. Each takes terribly long to
open. If I make a .pdf file of these "images" before I load them onto my
site, will this speed up the download/opening of drawing time?

No - especially considering the time it takes for the AR to open
Do some image compression in an image editor

All your indents (11 <blockquotes>) make your pages unreadable except at 1200+ screen resolution
remove them and use tables for your alignment

Thank you.
I'll try some image compression per your suggestion...and I will try to
figure out how to adjust my indents and tables for alignments.

Just a reminder that the time it takes to open a file is most often a
function of the file's size. There is really nothing you can do about that.
Users with boroadband internet connections will get the files in a reasonable
amount of time but dial-up users may not be ablt to access these files at
all.

If you put a large graphic on a page and resize it in FP the user will still
need to download the large file. A common techinque it to have two files, a
small low quality image for displaying on a web page with a link to the large
high quality image. CAD file are nororousely large. Print these to PDF
files should help with the size but also with copywriting your work. Here
again, you may want to make another small low quality image file that can be
the link to the larger file.

Finally, there are practicle limits to distributing large files through
HTTP. If you posting files larger than about 8MB you may want to consider
providing your users with anonymous FTP access. This is something your
hosting provider can help you with. The FTP protocol does a better job at
handling large files over low bandwidth connections.

I also have a problem with speed of downloading image files that I have
loaded on my webpage http://tandcl.homemail.com.au/. I have set them up as
thumbnails in PhotoGallery in the Pictures link (pictures.html), but when a
thumbnail is clicked on, it can take a while to load.

As I have a 256Kb Broadband connection, it isn't too bad for me, but it
would be worse for dial-up connection.

My images are all 600*400 but vary in size from 54Kb to 96Kb. I have edited
them using Microsoft Picture It! Is there any way to further compress the
images? I seem to recall somewhere a suggestion that the number of colours
could be reduced. Can this be done in Picture It! or Adobe PhotoElements,
which are the only photo editors I have currently installed (apart from
Paint). I may have some others which came with my scanner (Canon
PhotoRecord, I think) and my printer (an HP Photosmart 7150), but I did not
install these at the time - I still have the disks.

You don't want to diminish the number of colors in a photograph. This works
for a gif but is not a good idea for a photo.See this page:

Removing that large background image would help a bit. It's best no to
underline text that is not a link, such as "Click on...."
Hit Counter is not a link. Do you wish it to be??

Thank you. It is good to have someone cast an eye over my site.

I have changed the background to white and reanalysed using
http://www.websiteoptimization.com/services/analyze on both index.html and
pictures.html.

The index page passes with flying colours now, but I still get warnings for
the pictures page. I guess I have to put up with that if I want a selection
of pictures for people to see (unless I further categorise them into
separate pages).

Can you tell me - do the big pictures load when pictures.html is loaded or
only the thumbnails? If only the thumbnails, then they are only 2KB each so
it is not a large overhead. If it is both, is there a way of not loading a
picture until it is called?

I have removed the underlined text on a couple of pages, but there is still
some on about.html. However this is black underline anyway, not the default
blue for links so this shouldn't make anyway think it is a link, should it?

Hit counter is not a link. I found that my server doesn't have FP Server
Extensions so I have sent an Email asking whether they will add them. If
they can't I will delete the Hit Counter.

Thanks for your response. I will remove the spaces and replace them with _
and change to lower case names.

Re FP extensions, I have asked the website whether they can add FP
extensions. Maybe this is not possible on a Linux server. As a beginner, I
don't know this sort of detail. If they can't I'll remove the Hit Counter.

I'll try Irfanview and see what it does. (I have seen it before: if I
haven't got it, I'll Google for it).

Eleanor (E.T. Culling) said that I shouldn't reduce the number of colours,
but if there is another way to optimise images, then good, I'll have a go .

I know it's been some time since you posted this and I hope you are still
receiving answers posted here. I got FP about a year ago and I'm still
learning to use it so I'm up here reading all these postings to learn.
On your problem, I had the same one, I use Paint (PAINT NOT print)
Shop Pro version 9, as my graphic editor, yes it is a little expensive, but
it has
an option that will downsize your photo's/graphics and keep the quality of
each in tact. I Hope this helps you

It would be advantageous to make the CAD drawings a pdf for all to read.
I'm curious as to the type of cad image that is now on the site that takes a
long time to open. Does a person require the CAD program to open the
drawing?
