What has happened is a tough lesson. Never use Word (save or work) directly
with any type of removable media. Always copy to/from the local HDD before
working.

You may possibly be able to save your work if it is not too badly corrupted.
Many people say that they have managed to get Open Office to rescue corrupt
docx files. You may also be able to find someone with extensive XML
experience to find and fix the problem. A DOCX file is a collection of
component files zipped up and given the docx extension. If you rename the
document by changing the extension to ZIP, you can open the file into its
component files using an UNZIP utility. If it opens correct listing all the
files, then it may be possible to fix the error. If it doesn't open, then it
is too corrupt to be of any use.

If you have access to a previous version of Word, you can install the
compatibility pack, then open with the previous version, save it to another
..doc, then open and convert in word 2007.
