Image Viewed stats?

Is there any way to view how many times a picture has been viewed/loaded?

Scenario: We are sending out an email based in HTML format. We want some way to be able to tell
how many people view the email. I thought if there's a way to see how many times a picture has been
viewed, I could just put a blank 1x1 pixel image in the email and then just view the stats on that
image file and however many times it's been viewed would bean apprimate number of people who viewed
the email.

BUT, if anyone has a different way of tracking something like this, I'm open to suggestions.

Thanks.

check with your host. most hosts will allow you access to the server
logs. if they're raw logs it'll be pretty unattractive but you'll only
have to look for activity on that one file. maybe make an image that is
small and transparent, name it email tracker and include it in the
email. then you'll get a fairly good idea of what's happening when you
look it up in your log.

However, if a recipient has Outlook Express set to always display email in
Rich text format, the gif will show as an attachment
labeled: email tracker.

imho, not a good thing for folks to see.

Yes, as long as you have access to the server stats for your web, however if
the user doesn't except HTML email, you get any hits.
