Images and Drawing Objects don't display at "design" time

Using PowerPoint XP (2002), any images inserted into a slide or drawings
drawn on the slide do not show in the main editing view, but do show in the
"slide" view and when the presentation is run.

This problem does not occur in Word.

First, I tried a detect and repair off the original program cd-rom. No change.

I have used windows update to apply the Office update, although I am not
sure if this is same thing as the larger stand-alone download, although
presumably some registry checking is going on to see which components should
be updated.

My video drivers and DirectX are up to date.

Any help would be appreciated!

try changing hardware acceleration.

Turning off directdraw (halfway left on the acceleration slider) did the
trick. Since I am not a gamer, I am hoping this will will not be a problem.
