Images in Outlook 2007 SP2 while disconnected

V

Vespasian

I have Outlook 2007 SP2 set up to NOT automatically download images in HTML
e-mails. If it's not a spam message and has images blocked by Outlook, I will
then click on the information bar to download images for the message. When
closing the message, I will be prompted to save changes to the e-mail. I
choose to save changes to those e-mail messages. I have IE8 installed, if
that matters.

I am under the assumption that the changes that are saved include saving the
images that I downloaded to the .pst file so I don't have to keep downloading
them. I have messages with images from years ago that I don't expect to be
kept on other people's servers just so I can download them 50 times while
they monitor my usage.

The problem is, when I'm disconnected from the Internet, images no longer
appear in these messages. I get the placeholders with a red X instead of the
images. Once I re-connect to the Internet, the images will re-appear without
having to close/restart Outlook.

The e-mails I'm referring to are from POP3 accounts. I do have an IMAP
account as well, but I'm not referring to messages in the IMAP account when I
talk about this image behavior.

I don't recall ever noticing this situation before. Can anyone fill me in on
what's going on here?

I had seen that Web page before after looking for an answer to my solution on
these forums, but I didn't think it applied to my situation, as I can see
images while connected to my network (and hence the Internet in my case). I
am on Vista SP1.

Cleaning out the Outlook Secure Temp Folder did not change anything. I
found, and deleted, the contents of the Content.Outlook folder. There were
only a half dozen files in the folder. I could not find any OLK* folder, even
trying 'cd olk*' through the command prompt while in the Temporary Internet
Files folder.

I don't believe it applies to your situation. The images will be cached for
a short period of time but are not saved with the message - saving changes
doesn't change the embedded URL to use a local path.

I'm surprised this is how Outlook behaves. I thought, and had read, otherwise.

I hope they come up with an option to save them to the e-mail (in the .pst
file), as I'd at least like to see my e-mail as it originally looked without
having to worry about images being removed from the senders server, or worse
yet, changed... not to mention tracking/monitoring concerns.

Unfortunately, I would expect this to be somewhere near the bottom of the
to-do list for the Outlook team.

My thanks to both yourself and Milly for your efforts.

if you need to save the images, you need to use file, save as... and save
it outside of outlook.

I was playing around with this issue, and came up with a workaround which
I'll leave here for others who may stumble across this. The images I'm
referring to are ones I only want for my e-mail records. I don't care about
saving individual images elsewhere for other uses.

I noticed that forwarding messages changes linked images to embedded images.
While I want my images embedded, that would mess up all the header
information having all my e-mails be to and from myself along with the dates
being changed.

Instead, all I had to do was edit the message, cut the body of the message,
paste it back onto itself, and then save. That embeds the images so I won't
lose them. The source file even lists the original link as an alternate image
source.

Of course the message takes up more space with the images being embedded...
