Images in Word 2003 file not showing in Word 2008

On opening a Word 2003 (Windows) file in Word 2008, some of the graphics don't appear. I seem to remember there was a fairly simple fix for this, but can't find it now.

Thanks,

Graham

Hi Graham:

There's no "simple" fix for this one in Word 2008. Word 2008 has a new
graphics engine that is supposed to be a lot more bullet-proof.

I have copied this to the Microsoft Engineer in charge of the graphics side
of things.

Matt? You got your ears on?

Cheers

John,

Thanks, my workaround is to open the files in NeoOffice and copy and paste the graphics into Word 2008, but its not too satisfactory a solution.

And I can't get it to work with equations, Word 2008 garbles Word 2003 equations, but for some reason, although they appear OK in NeoOffice, I can't copy them.

Another person with a similar problem reports that he sees the pictures
in the Navigation Pane Thumbnails, but not in the main doc window. Do you?

These are the simple fixes for graphics not showing---but if you are
only seeing this in Word 2003 files, and you are seeing some graphics in
the file, they may not apply. However, always worth testing the easy answer.

If you are in View | Draft, floating graphics will not show up. Switch
to View | Print Layout. (actually, this could account for seeing some
pix and not others)

In Word | Preferences | View, under Show, make sure Drawings is checked
and Image Placeholders is UNchecked.

Daiya,

Thanks, I don't see the images in the thumbnails. I am print layout and the preferences were already as you suggest.

However, I notice that my original file, before I started to edit it with track changes, does show all the images. The track changes version only shows some of the images. NeoOffice shows all the images in both files.

Maybe I have corrupted the file in some way, which Word is objecting to, and NeoOffice is happy with.

Hi Graham, can you send me a copy of the file? I'd like to take a look to
see if I can determine the root cause of the problem.

Thanks!

Email it to the address he posted from. Remove the characters "NOSPAM" from
the address he used to post with :)

Jason,

I could, but not sure where to send it.

John,

I can't actually see the email address anywhere, but I see from your post that you obviously can see information about email addresses that I can't.

How are you viewing these messages, I an looking at them in the forum where email address information isn't visible.

Hi Graham:

Thanks for adding your name to your post: makes the whole place seem so much
more 'human' :)

When Jason posted, he should have released his email address for public
viewing: I thought he had. Sorry, we're not looking at the web interface
unless you complain about it :)

I just tried to go in there myself, and I can't login.

Please bear with it: they are making big and keenly awaited improvements to
the Mactopia web interface right now, and as they roll through the code
changes, various things get broken briefly.

Yes, we "could" suggest that they should not roll the changes into the live
system until they have been tested. But if we did that, we would get an
update only twice a year, like a lot of other websites around here. Right
now, we're getting updates on practically a daily basis. So let's be nice
to them, because it's going to end up as one of the very best community
forums on the web :)

BTW: I would not like you to think that the mechanism we use to look at the
forum is something secret or hidden or "MVP-only". It's not. We're using
Entourage :) See here for instructions on setting up Entourage (or any
other newsreader than takes your fancy...):

John,

No problems with the way things work, I just need to get used to it, and as you suggest I could use a mail reader rather than the web site.

Hey Guys,

I`ve got a similar problem with Word2008 for mac. Just upgraded from
2004.

If I insert pictures to my document, either by drag and drop or by
Menu-insert-picture I cant see the pictures on the document. (Just the
black boundary)
If I go to the Print Preview view, I see the pics.
If I save it as PDF I get the pics on the pdf.
If I rotate the image, I see the phantom-view of the pic rotating, but
when I drop it, I don't see the pic.
If I open a word template with pictures, and I replace the picture, I
can see it.

Don't know what to do....

cheers,

John

Hi John:

Let's just check the easy one first: go to Word>Preferences>View and check
that "Image placeholders" is NOT checked.

I don't think that's it, because you can see pictures in Preview, but we
might get lucky...

Come back if it doesn't make any difference.

Cheers

I have a similar twist on this issue. Just switched from Winword and when I open up a doc created in Word 2003 with macWord08 - I can see the pasted in Excel cells as pictures, but when I go to print them, the picture is blanked out although the place is held for it. Also in preview, the picture does not appear.

My objective is just to print out portions of the doc I received from a winword user.

Help Please

the standard checks:

In Word | Preferences | Print, make sure "drawing objects" is checked.
In Word | Preferences | View, under Show, make sure Drawings is checked
and Image Placeholders is UNchecked.

Daiya,

"the standard reply"

confirmed that both these checks were as recommended, so this is not the issue. Other ideas?

Thanks

Do you have text wrapping applied to the Excel Object? If so I don't believe
the object will print unless you include the para to which it is anchored
regardless of whether it "appears" to be included in the selection you're
printing... Could that be it? If so just re-anchor the object to one of the
paras to be printed - although that could be a positioning consideration as
well depending on settings.
