Sometimes when I try to insert an image into my word document it attaches itself to the top of the page and refuses to move where I want it, especially if I want in alongside the first paragraph of my document. If I do eventually get it go go to the desired location the lease alteration, eg. in size, seems to throw it out again. Help!! I'm going demented with this!!

you need to set up the way the image is inserted.
You can double-click the image to see how it is set and in the dialog
there, you can have it flowing with the text or not, aligned left,
right, whatever....

I suspect that in your case, you need to chose Square for your image
layout.
If you go to the options to align it precisely the way you want, I would
stringly suggest aligning to margins rather than columns. I've had nasty
issues with that in Word 2004.

Another trick you could consider for images that need to flow with the
text: create a 1-cell, border-less table and drag your image into it.
Tables behave a lot more consistently than images.

Elaborating on Corentin's reply, what you first have to realize is that
*objects" in a Word document are not independent elements that can be
manipulated independently in the same manner as in Desktop Publishing (page
layout) applications. All objects in a Word doc are "attached" to the text
in some way, so as goes the text, so goes the object.
