Impact on assigning resource at 0% Units

Hello, I have a client whom I am in the process of discussing pros /
cons of using an administrave MPP file vs the admin categories.

If they use the admin project file and assign someone to task
vacation, in order for it to appear on thir timesheet it should the
resource be assigned to the fixed duration task w/ a constraint on it
to end Dec 31 at 0% units. I though in reading past posts, assinging
someone to a task like this at 0% and some negaive impact on
avaialbilty, but I could be mistaken.

Again I am just weighing the pros and cons. I am a advocate of Admin
Categories for time off, since but the cleint is locked in on the O%
assinment task.

Any input would be appreciated.

Hi Mike,

I think that you would want the opposite - put the resource at 100% and full
time if you are using the mpp route. If you put the resource at 0% on that
task (vacation) in the file and assign any sort of hours in the work column
the system will try to do what it theoretically can't - level that work
across available time - which, since it is "0" then the system will either
error out or it will just push the vacation time to the next available time.
You could test this out but I think that is the way it would work.

Also, if you are using an MPP file, then you would want the person at full
use during that vacation time or the other schedules that are created for
projects will just pile onto that time. (assuming that they look at people
over 100%)

BUT, neither of these are really the best solution. Given the situation, I
wouldn't assign anything in the mpp file at all. I would go into that
individual's calendar and make an exception for non-working time and block it
out - that way the person isn't available anywhere to anybody.

I'd suggest you use the admin categories. It is cleaner.

It is possible to use Admin Project. You have to use fix duration, non
effort driven task type. When you add resource to the task, you can
estimate his vacation time. For example, if he has 4 weeks, put down
160 hours as work. It is closest you can get.
