Import .dbx files into Outlook 2003

I have a backup of an old computer that crashed. I have .dbx files from my
old email system on it.

I bought a Windows 7 64-bit machine. I am not able to install Outlook
Express onto this machine. I get errors during installation.

On my new machine, I was able to import he .dbx files into Windows Live Mail
and am sucessfully using it for email. However, I would rather use Microsoft
Outlook 2003 for email.

I have tried a number of things to get the .dbx files to import, and to
import directly from Windows Live Mail, but I can't find the right sequence
of steps to work online or in Help.

So, I have a bunch of .dbx files, and a running version of Windows Live
Mail, and I would like to somehow get the email info from either of those
into Outlook 2003.

Any suggestions?

You can't import dbx files. You can only import from an installation of
Windows Mail.
File > Import and Export> Import from another Program or file > Windows
Mail.

First off, Win7 doesn't support Outlook Express (hence the error messages)
or Windows Mail (as was in Vista).
Have you installed OL2003? If so, open Windows Live Mail, go to your Inbox,
click on File, Export, Messages..., pick Microsoft Exchange, and click on
Next. Does that get your messages into Outlook?

I don't recall since I don't have Outlook installed anymore, but isn't there
an option to import from Live Mail directly into Outlook? Also your contacts
list? Like I said, I don't use OL anymore, but I thought that was how I had
done it when I was.

In any case in any import process the modified dates are all changed to the
import date.
Whereas Exporting from WLM to Outlook (exchange) retains the dates

And if we take the OP at his word that he really wants to import his DBX
files into Outlook, he'll have no choice but to download and install Windows
Mail, which in fact is supported on Windows 7.

Windows Live Mail is supported in Win7; Windows Mail is not, at least not
natively. It was for Vista only.

Actually, I can't export from WLM and import into Outlook 2003, at least I
can't figure out how.

When I go into Export in Windows Live Mail (not Windows Mail) I see the
options:
Microsoft Exchange
Microsoft Windows Live Mail

I selected "Microsoft Exchange"
I then selected "Outlook" from the Profile popup. That was the only choice
in the list.

Then I chose "all folders" from the list of folders to export and hit "OK"
Windows Live Mail exported everything.

Where it exported it, I have no idea.

When I go into Microsoft Office Outlook 2003, I choose "File -> Import" and
the option "Internet Mail and Addresses" gives me two choices: Eudora and
Outlook Express. I can't choose either of these (I've tried OE but I always
get the "folder in use" message).

I don't see any other options to import the files, and I see no mention of
Windows Live Mail (which of course did not exist at the time Outlook 2003 was
written.)

That's it, that's all I can find out, and everything I've googled/binged
says I'm out of luck. perhaps my only real option is upgrading Office to
2007?

When WLM exports it does so to your default Outlook profile or to whatever
profile is open at the time. Next time open the Outlook profile where you
want these messages before you do the export. You'll find them in one of
your message folders. Use Folder List view in Outlook so you're looking at
all your Folders. The export process may create its own folder.

Choose that option. I agree it's a bit confusing but the next step will show

without my having to import them - I assumed I was supposed to follow
the "export first, then import" pattern. Because the messages were
out of sight in the folders tree view on the left, I didn't see them
until I started look for them at your suggestion.
