import excel data to visio timeline not gnatt

visio '03 seems to only import excel data to a Gnatt chart not to a timeline
even when I try to use the create a timline wizard then save it to a file
then try to import it. I have multiple projects which I want to compair
progress on (refreshing often), each with 8 major phases and 2-5 subphases.
Have tried new/timeline file/tools/run add-on/import project
data/existing/excel data/excel file
