Import OE 5 mail folders & msgs to new pc with OE 6

The solution below didn't work for me from Tom's site. has
good info but didn't work. Can some one please help...

I did everything here 3 times. my files are in .dbx format

"How do I import OE5 and OE6 mail folders?"
Importing from a CDRW or Zip disk
OE must have write-access to any *.dbx files you want to
import. You must therefore copy the files to your hard
disk and then turn off the Read-Only attribute. In
Explorer, select all the files, then right-click on any
one and select Properties. You can then uncheck the Read-
Only box. Or at a DOS prompt, enter this:
attrib -r *.*
First make sure the *.dbx files you wish to import are not
stored in the current OE store root folder. Also check
that the *.dbx files are not marked as read-only. In OE,
click File| Import| Messages, select OE5 from the list,
then choose either From Identity (for importing from
another Identity on the same machine) or From Store root
directory. You will then have the option to import all
mail folders or only those you select. (see also Backup
and Restore)

OE6 and WindowsXP Note: you will only see OE4 and OE6 in
the list of programs from which to import, and so it might
seem that you cannot import from OE5. However both OE5 and
OE6 use exactly the same file structure. To import from
OE5, simply select OE6 on the list, then select "Import
mail from an OE6 store directory" (not "Identity"). Then
Browse to the folder that contains the OE5 *.dbx files.

If your backup files did not include "Folders.dbx", this
method of importing will not work as OE will not "see" the
*.dbx files without Folders.dbx. To work around this,
click File| Identities| Add New Identity. Switch to the
new Identity when prompted, but cancel the new account
wizard that starts automatically. Click Tools| Options|
Maintenance| Store Folder to determine the location of
this Identity's store. Close OE and open the store folder
in Windows Explorer. Copy your old *.dbx files into this
store folder, then delete the file "Folders.dbx". Open OE
and it will create a new Folders.dbx that includes the old
*.dbx files. Click File| Switch Identities and return to
your original Identity. Click File| Import| Messages| OE5
(or OE6)| Identity and select the new Identity. After the
import is complete, you can delete the new Identity, and
then manually delete its store folder.

This newsgroup is about Outlook, not Outlook Express. Ask in the proper
newsgroup.

I don't speak for Smiths, and Smiths doesn't speak for me.

Thanx for your detailed explanation, but it didn't work for me, either. My situation is that the .dbx
files were not created by oe, but by MSN6. When I run the inport wizard it can't find any messages,
even though all the files are there. Is there anything else I can do?

This newsgroup is for support of Outlook 97, 98, 2000, 2002 & 2003 from the
Office family for Windows PCs. For Outlook Express (OE) support try posting
in one of these newsgroups:
microsoft.public.inetexplorer.ie4.outlookexpress for OE 4.x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie5.outlookexpress for OE 5.x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie55.outlookexpress for OE 5.5x
microsoft.public.windows.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress for OE 6.x
microsoft.public.internet.mail.mac for the Macintosh version of OE

If those groups aren't carried on the news server that's carrying this group
try using msnews.microsoft.com (MS's public news server that's the source
for all the microsoft.public newsgroups).

Also a good source of Outlook Express info can be found here:
