First, never import a PST into Outlook. You will lose data.

Second, where is your old PST located? Is it in a folder in which you have
permissions? Have you made sure the PST is not read-only and that you have
read/write permisson to it? The correct was to handle a PST is to use
File>Open>Personal Folders File.

On a similar note, how do I get the old pst file from a backup to behave as
the default pst after a reinstall?

I can't figure out how to copy data from the old to the new empty one, or
set the old as the default.

Also, if emails have arrived since the reinstall and are still on my server,
they'll find their way into the old hopefully now default pst, won't they?

You can open any PST file with Outlook (File | Open | Outlook Data File)

You can copy (drag-and-drop) any items from one Personal Folders file to
another (inside Outlook).

That doesn’t seem to work. I’m getting duelling folders within Outlook.

Here’s more detail on my situation:

I’m trying to reinstall my old Outlook .pst file post-harddrive reformatting

I have a .pst file backed up, but had read elsewhere in here that the way to
add it back in is NOT to copy & paste it over the new empty .pst file.

First off, in my situation, is that correct?

If not, what I’ve done so far was to:
“In Outlook do File-Open-Outlook Data File
and browse to your copied file. You then have two options - either set that
pst file as the default mail delivery location, or copy the data from that
file to your new file.†(This was copied from a post made on 8/22)

My problem was that I didn’t see any options other than to double click the
old Outlook file, which worked just fine, but I now have two sets of
calendars and email inboxes/etc. onboard at the same time.

For example, under My Calendars, there's a box for Calendar and 2nd box for
Calendar in Personal Folder.

Checking both gives me two side-by-calendars, one in white background , the
older one in green.

The "new" calendar is empty btw -- I'm recovering from a hard drive mishap
and data rescue that worked: it's reading the old .pst file just fine, it
seems, as that data is showing up in the “Personal Folder†green calendar.

Also, all accumulated emails received since the reformat are stored
separately on my server, so I think they'd make into Outlook somehow
(correct?).

Is there a way to consolidate them into one? Or, is this perhaps a situation
where overwriting the current empty "new" .pst file with the recovered one is
a good idea?

In short, what should I do to get my Outlook working exactly as it did
before the reformatting of the harddrive?

No, you did well by not overwriting the new (empty) PST file. If it is
really completely empty, close it (and delete it). The use your old PST
file as the main Personal Folders file.

If it is not completely empty, and you have some items in the new file
that you still need, drag-and-drop them into your original PST file.
Then close and delete the new one.
