Import versus Open Datafile

Dear Newsgroupreader and Experts,
can you tell me the main differences between import and file > open >
datafile?
some people here advised to open not import the pst file!

The reason it is better to File > Open vs. Import is that one doesn't lose
things like custom views on folders. The import doesn't bring these type of
things over.
