importing .dat files

Help! I'm trying to import a .dat file in Microsoft Excel for Mac
(2004). When I try to open the file itself from the desktop, I get an
error message saying no application found, and to visit microsoft.com/
mac. Can anyone help me? I've always been a mac person, and am not
familiar with .dat files. My googling seems to find that no one likes
these files.

A file with a .dat extension could be nearly anything - by convention it
just means that the file contains "data", which could be an XL workbook,
a jpeg picture, an application, a text file, a binary file, etc.

Not sure why you're trying to open it with XL, but unless you know what
type of application created it (or what type of information it
contains), predicting the ability of any application to open it will be
a crapshoot at best.

If you want to open it in XL, try using File/Open from the XL menu.
