Importing excel file

Importing data from excel can be tricky to say the least, but can anyone
explain why an empty cell can cause the import to fail. I have narrowed
down import failure to a single cell, and that cell is empty. If I press
delete on the empty cell the import goes ahead. When I return the cell back
to its original state of being empty the import again does not work. What
the h... is going on here? Anybody any idea?

empty defined: no string, no null, no zero(0), in other words a clear cell
and a clear formula bar.
