importing files into excel

I am tring to import a file into excel. It is a txt file that was done with
notepad. It is from a vendor. When I import the file, I am also getting the
little square boxes that appear with the data in each column. How do I get
rid of the little square boxes? The system that I need to import the file
into, does not like the square boxed and will not proceed?

Gabby,

You need to use the Text import wizard. First, you'll need to know about
the file. Is it fixed-fields, or delimited (commas, tabs, etc.)? Open it
in NotePad and have a look. Post some of it if you want help. You can copy
it from NotePad and Paste it into your reply.

To clarify what Earl is asking you, fixed-fields means the data (in Notepad)
will appear in neat columns, so you can reliably say that column 2 begins
here, column 3 begins there, etc.

If the file's too large for Notetab, it'll burp and give you an error
message. Use an alternative text editor like Notetab:

The "Light" version is free, and is sufficient for your purposes. There
aren't many files large enough to cause trouble with this program.
