Importing GEdcom into Visio

Can I import Gedcom file into Vision and Use Visio in order to layout and
print the family tree?

I'm not familiar with Gedcom, but I suspect that it is a proprietary format
that Visio will not recognize directly.
You can check to see what formats the Gedcom program will allow you to save
/ export to. Visio may be able to read something that Gedcom can create.

GEDCOM is the standard for genealogy data transfer.

And to add my two pence, the format is text based and the last rev ( #6)
also has a an XML format.

I have yet to come across any utility that will create a Visio diagram from
the information in a GEDCOM file.

As mentioned above, GEDCOM is text open format, which is using as the
standard for all genealogy community.
However, there is no good frontend tool that can nicely display the trees,
as they get complex.
Visio, on the other hand, is a great tool for that task.
If only Visio could import that standard.
I think this is a very easy task, which can bring Microsoft another niche of
users which are looking for such ability.

Any idea if this can and will be done?

As mentioned above, DEGCOM is a standard of the Genealogy community. It's a
text file.

Many software exist out there, but none with good capability to layout and
print in nice manner, as Visio can.
I think that many people will use Visio for that, once Visio will be able to
import Gedcom.

Is there a chance to have such a utility from Microsoft?

There are many programs for handling Gedcom files from free to
expensive, a specialised genealogy program will always be able to do a
better job that a more general program like Visio, remember that the
layout of genealogy data is quite complicated. If the specialised
programs can't show a decent layout then I doubt whether Visio would
do any better. It's not the capabilities of the program that are the
limitation, just the difficulty of showing complex relationship data.
It probably could be done in Visio, it could well take a year to
develop something usable.

This is the kind of specialized area where third party providers are better
able to create custom solutions based on Visio. There are tons of good
ways to use the drawing platform, and we have great developers out there
meeting those niches. This is not likely to be something you will see
coming from Microsoft.
