Importing graphics with transparent backgrounds

I am having difficulty creating logo graphics that can be easily placed in
Word docs that have transparent backgrounds and show up properly in new and
old Word versions. PNG files sometimes show as a black box, and it is fiddly
to convert them to transparent GIFs each time you use them.
Any other ideas?
