Importing image: White fills in transparent area

When I try to import images that have transparent areas, Powerpoint always
fills that area in with white. Is there a certain file extension that I can
save an image to from Photoshop that will keep the image transparent?

I tried using the magic wand tool and clicking the transparent area, select
inverse (so only the image is selected), copy, paste and still fills in the
area.

Any suggestions?
