Is there a way to import inforamtion into existing contacts without
overwriting the contact or creating a duplicate?

Perhaps. Define "inforamtion"
In what format is this data?

The contacts is located in our Public Folders and custom fields such as
"Product" and "Date of Sale" were created. This information can be exported
from another program in a tab separated format. The customer's basic
information such as name, address & phone # has already been imported from
Quick Books. After the sale is complete the additional custom fields data is
manually entered. However, this same information is also used in a different
program that requires the data to be entered. We could elimate a step of
data entry by exporting and importing.
Thanks for your help.

Seems like rather a lot of information you left out, don't you think?
Custom fields cannot be exported.

If you're looking to update your contacts from an external file - then
ContactGenie DataPorter (Personal or Pro) will do that. You can also create
a CSV file of contact data including all custom info but we don't recommend
the current version for exporting the info if your contact folder starts
running into the thousands (we'll have a dedicated "Exporter" product
available available in early Q1'2006) - http://www.contactgenie.com
