Importing Microsoft User Date into Entourage X from 2001

D

Don Newberry

I got an iMac in order to migrate to OSX. I didn't install OS9 (Classic) on
the new machine. I did, however, save the Microsoft User Data folder from
the OS9 machine that used Entourage 2001. I'm trying to get the old messages
into the new machine.
I tried to simply drag the "Messages" folder into the OSX Microsoft User
Data folder, but it's not working.
I tried using the import function from Entourage X for both text files and
applications, but neither work. Of course, Entourage 2001 is not installed
on the new machine, so I can't simply import from the application.
Please advise.
Thanks.

Put your Office 2001 CD in the drive, and then try importing again.

And bring over at least the whole Identity folder - the Messages file is no
good on its own. You need the Database and other files that go with it. You
can bring over the Identity folder, the Microsoft Office 2001 Identities
folder or even the whole MUD folder. It doesn't matter where - leave it on
the Desktop until you've finished importing, then delete if you want. Just
one of these folders, and the 2001 CD in the CD drive, Then import.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm still unable to import. I get either a "-61"
error code, or a message that says it couldn't import "because the operation
could not be completed."
Here's the deal: the old 2001 MUD folder has an "Identities" folder, and it
also has an "Office 2001 Identities" folder. The "Identities" folder (for
original user "Bob") has both "Database" and "Database cache" files inside
the "Main Identity" folder.
The "Office 2001 Identities" folder has a "Bob" folder and a "Sue" folder
(they shared the computer recently), but the "Bob" folder does not have the
"Database" or "Database Cache" files.
When I try to import from the "Main Identities" folder, I get the -61 error.
When I try to import from the "Bob" folder, I get the "could not be
completed" error.
By the way, I WAS able to import messages from the MUD folder on the main
part of the drive. What I'm having trouble w/ is the info in the Documents
folder in the Users folder.
Thank you for any help.
Thanks.

The Identities folder is from OE 5.

You should boot into OS 9, run Entourage 2001, and rebuild the database.
There might be some database corruption that is preventing your data from
being imported.

Forget Identities folder - that was for Outlook Express, as Dave said.

(they shared the computer recently), but the "Bob" folder does not have the
"Database" or "Database Cache" files.

What happened to them? Find them if you can, and put them back. They should
have the same modification date as the messages file if they're the correct
ones. Without a Database file, I don't see how you're going to be able to do
a Rebuild as Dave suggested.

When I try to import from the "Main Identities" folder, I get the -61 error.
When I try to import from the "Bob" folder, I get the "could not be
completed" error.

Forget those - they were in the OE Identities folder.

The MUD folder "on the main part of the drive" is presumably the one you
brought over from the equivalent place on your old computer. That's all you
need.

The MUD folder in your OS user's Documents folder can only have been created
in Jaguar or Panther, using any version of Entourage. But you say that you
did not install Entourage 2001 on your new computer. Therefore it has _only_
the data for your existing identities of Entourage X. You cannot possibly
have an Office 2001 Identities folder there unless you moved it there. You
didn't install Classic so you can't even have been running OE in Classic.
Therefore the "Identities" folder can only have got there by your moving
them there.

There's no need to import TWICE from the same files. How/why do you have two
different copies of the Entourage 2001 Identities folder - one in the root
Documents and one in the user Documents? You must have copied the same
folder twice.

If you _did_ install Classic and _could_ boot into OS 9, and _did_ install
Office 2001, then Entourage 2001 would use the root MUD folder when booted
in OS 9, and the user MUD folder when running in Classic in Panther. But
none of this applies to you. You can't boot into OS 9, didn't install
Classic and don't intend to install Office 2001. If your old computer ha
just OS 9, not X, you had only MUD folder there. It makes no difference
where you copy it to on your new computer. If you happened to copy it to
root Documents, or copied over the whole root Documents form old computer -
which you must have, since OS X does not install a root Documents folder at
all - that's OK for this scenario. And you say you imported from the Office
2001 Identities folder in that MUD folder OK. Fine. That's it. There's
nothing else to import. How did this other (mangled copy of) Office 2001
Identities make its way into your user Documents/MUD folder? However it did,
I think you can just forget about it. Delete it.

There's a lot about this that sounds very muddled and confused. Can you
share any light on where these rogue folders came from?
