Importing pictures for custom bullets causes hang

In Word 2003 I'm having issues trying to customize
bullets using pictures. I find that it either takes an
extremely long time to process or that it just completely
hangs the application.

To reproduce the problem I'm having

Format -> Bullets and Numbering -> (Select one of the
bullet panes to edit) -> Customize -> Picture (you may
experience a hang from this point forward) -> Import ->
(select picture)

At this point there is a much larger chance of a 1-2
minute freeze or a hang. Thanks in advance for any
assistance.

To add what else I've discovered, I have noticed that
during the points where I mentioned that it slows down or
hangs, Word tries to access the Internet for some
reason. Whenever I cancel the request to leave our
intranet, there is no problem. I guess the question
would then be, why would Word need to hit the Internet
every time this operation is performed?

Open help, Under See also, click Online Content Settings, clear "Search online
content when connected".
