Importing Text

Scott

I recently installed OfficeXP SP-3 and Access no longer imports text files
properly. Every field is set up exactly like the first field would be set
up. Any thoughts on how to fix this?

No, I am not using import specification and very seldom do. It is possible
that I could set it up to do that as a work around but most of the time I
dont need to do that. As I click on Field1 to change the name or whether is
a number field or text field the changes are made but when I click on Field2
they're identical to Field1 and if I change Field 2 it also changes Field 1
and all of the other fields that I want to import. I import text files a
lot and this is going to be a serious problem for me.

I've not seen reports of this issue for ACCESS 2002 (Office XP); it sounds
similar to a problem in ACCESS 2003 that was fixed by a hotfix
(http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;837003).

Try running a repair of your Office XP setup. There may be a problem with
the text import wizard.

I also would try clicking on the Advanced button and see if you can modify
the fields' information there in the "specification" part of the wizard. As
a troubleshooting issue if nothing else.

Ken, I read the hotfix article and it is very similar to the 2003 problem,
unfortunatley there is no fix for the 2002 version. I also did a repair and
that did not help. I tried using the Advanced button to use the import
specificatins and that WILL work. I'll go that route from now on.

Thanks!

OK - I'll check with my peers and MS to see if there are other reports of
similar situation with Office XP.

I guess it would be nice to have a fix because I know the layout of most of
the files I import but the ones I dont it will be harder to do with the
advanced button.

And do you have all the Jet patches up to date too?

I have just been able to reproduce the problem that you note. I had thought
it was working ok for me, but I usually use the Advanced window and hadn't
paid attention much since I installed SP2 of Windows.

OK - I am reporting this to Microsoft as a bug.

You actually reproduced the problem? Freaking Amazing.
Couple of more questions for you....
1. Do you get paid for all of this?
2. How in the world do you keep track of posts that you've replied to?
3. How will I found out about a fix asuming they come out with one?

No, there is no pay for this volunteer work. See
for information about the MVPs.

2. How in the world do you keep track of posts that you've replied to?

I use Outlook Express and set the Watch Messages flag on posts that I've
answered; I then sort these to the top of my ng messages so that I can scan
them quickly.

3. How will I found out about a fix asuming they come out with one?

I have submitted the bug via the MS person who manages the MVP program. I
should hear back from her with some information regarding (1) is it a bug;
(2) is it a bug that MS will fix in an "old" technology; (3) if it will be
fixed, how might that occur and when.

I can post back in this thread if I hear an answer within a few weeks. If it
takes longer than that, I can send you an email if you will provide me with
your email address. Send me an email (remove this is not real from my email
reply address) and I'll hang onto it for when I get some info.
